Leaving Home

PAINTED CHURCH SCHULENBURG
Pastel and Colored Pencil on paper
16 x 20

This is Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church, one of the Painted Churches of Fayette County, and located near Dubina, Texas.  The word "Dub" in Czech means "Oak" and refers to the oak trees that were in the area when the first Moravian settlers arrived.  As picturesque as these churches are on the exterior they are even more beautiful on the inside.  Decorative paintings and stenciling grace the walls and the ceiling, evoking for the hardy people who made a new home on the Texas frontier, echoes of the grand buildings they left in their homeland.

Invitation to the Rodeo

INVITATION TO THE RODEO
Pastel and Colored Pencil on paper

This image might also be called "Coats of Many Colors" for the assortment of Bays and Chestnut horses, with one Palomino and one Appaloosa on the fringe.  This picture records the same event as in "Rodeo Riders" and is of a group of Junior riders who rode from Houston to Schulenberg. Texas to deliver an invitation to attend the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.  I liked the graphic quality of the image and the colors, the bright blue on the horse's legs and the same color contrasted with the black vests on the rider's clothing.

I like mules, and I enjoy drawing them.  They have a kind patience that makes them ideal working companions.  I saw the team that inspired this Pastel and Colored Pencil drawing at a Fourth of July Parade in Vale, Oregon in 2009.  The old Oregon Trail runs directly through Vale and the town puts on quite a rodeo in July.
